Chinese Stuff - Pursuit of Cultural Identities of Contemporaneous Articles in Common Use
Sep 10, 2011 - Oct 10, 2011

Contents of the Exhibition come from the book titled Chinese Stuff which was compiled by Popcorn in 2008

Thermos flask, red-blue-white bag, Erguotou, embroidered banner and electronic mosquito swatter…which should be most representative of China? The answer is articles with ubiquitous appearances in everyday life. Contents of the Exhibition come from the book titled Chinese Stuff which was compiled by Popcorn in 2008. The exhibition titled Chinese Stuff is about the pursuit of cultural identities of contemporaneous articles of common use in China, involving visual aesthetics and sociological thoughts.

Human evolutionary process is exhibited through existence of "articles". Contemporary people are more and more dependant on articles to articles to perceive the world and identify their IDs and statuses and China doesn't make an exception. The leading roles of this exhibition are about 120 “Chinese Stuff”, which are commonly seen in and richly representative of the country. They are realized by exploring Chinese objects from real life and excavated connections between “objects” and its cultural sense that unscrambled relationships among the “objects”, Chinese people and the society in a brand new point of view. They also revivified the real Chinese life with details and deliver an open-minded, tolerant and plain Chinese-style aesthetics.

Why attention on contemporaneous articles in common use in China? For China whose influences to the world have been increasingly profound, we cannot present it to the world only with its serious politics, stereo-type historical specimens or grand epic image of elitism. Instead, we hope to explore cultural values in pristineness and humanity manifested by concrete objects of everyday life (i.e. articles, architecture, imagery, men or women) and exhibit a live and animated China to the whole world.

This exhibition is free and open to the public.

Opening Hours: 10:00am to 5:00pm (closed every Monday)
Exhibition Location: Lightspot 55 Creative Industry Park (No.94 Dongsishitiao Street, Dongcheng District, Beijing)

And the China Intercontinental Press has been taking Chinese Stuff for two consecutive years to participate in Frankfurt Book Fair.

By the chance of Frankfurt Book Fair, Mr. Peter Schneckmann, the President of Dragonbridge Association for Cultural Exchange with Asia, and Dr. Stephan von der Schulenburg, the Curator of East Asia & Middle East Department, Museum für Angewandte Kunst Frankfurt, have closely contacted with Popcorn Idea Factory, and eventually reached the agreement of the Chinese Stuff exhibition in Museum für Angewandte Kunst Frankfurt.
